File Your Claim in Your State βHow unemployment benefits are calculated
Most states look at your wages in the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters (the "base period"). Total wages during this period determine your eligibility and benefit amount.
Most states calculate your WBA as approximately 1/26 of your wages in your highest-earning quarter, or roughly 40β50% of your average weekly wage β whichever formula the state uses.
Every state sets a maximum weekly benefit. No matter how high your wages, you cannot receive more than the cap. Florida's cap: $275. Massachusetts cap: $1,033.
Most states pay up to 26 weeks. Florida is the exception at 12 weeks. Massachusetts allows up to 30. Some states vary duration based on the state unemployment rate.
